A breathtaking performance by a team of army skydivers is set to hold the city in thrall this weekend.
Skydivers from the Para Regiment (or Para Commandos) of the Indian Army will take the plunge from helicopters thousands of feet up in the sky on the sidelines of a major army sports event on Saturday.

An army band will also perform at the event, which will see officers and men from the Mahar Regiment of the Indian Army begin a 1,200 km cycling expedition from the city to the town of Saugor in Madhya Pradesh. While 60 officers and men from the Mahar Regiment will set off from the city along with 10 cyclists from the TI Cycle Ltd, around 250 cyclists will join them at various cantonments en route.

The cyclists are making the journey to their Regimental Centre in Madhya Pradesh, which is celebrating its twelfth reunion. Officers and men from Mahar Regiment posted elsewhere in the country will also be attending the event.

The skydiving will take place at 5.10 pm and the cycle expedition will be flagged off at 5.25 pm. An army officer, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said commandos from the 50 (I) Para Brigade will perform a series of aerial stunts while freefalling from more than 5,000 feet, through formations.

Army parachute shows consist of jumpers opening their parachutes and landing geometrical shaped formations and breaking away just a few moments before actually touching the ground.

Some jumps also have stunts where more than fifty jumpers freefall in formations before opening their parachutes close to the grounds.u00a0During the show, eight men will drop from a single helicopter from the Army Aviation Corps. The Parachute Regiment is a part of the Special Forces and is used for conducting clandestine military operations, sometimes directly landing in enemy territory.
