With the new police commissioner taking over office from Bidari, city youth can hope that the deadline on nightlife may be extended, as Mirji is apparently amiable to the idea

WITH Jyothi Prakash Mirji replacing Shankar Bidari as city police commissioner, party animals can hope that the deadline on nightlife may be extended. It is said that the new commissioner, unlike his predecessor, is apparently affable to the idea.

"I am not against extending the deadline. In fact, I am putting serious thought into the matter, but it is not up to me to take the final decision. If the government comes out with a clear policy, I'm here to cooperate," said Mirji.

Renukacharya, who assured the management of five star hotels of extending the deadline from the current 11pm to 2 am, has to pass political hurdles, as the CM and home minister are still not in line with him

However, according to sources, Renukacharya, who assured the management of five star hotels of extending the deadline from the current 11pm to 2 am, has to pass political hurdles, as the chief minister and home minister are still not in line with him.

"Please don't start the discussion at this point of time. The new commissioner has just come in and should be allowed to settle down. There are things to be done before we start talking about it," said Renukacharya.

Sans CM's consent
Last year, Renukacharya allegedly made the promise to the five star hotels, without the CM's consent. It was a time when dissidence was at its peak and Renukacharya was seen in Tourism Minister G Janardana Reddy's camp spearheading the political coup.

Being a part of the rival camp, he could not achieve his ends by any means.u00a0 Renukacharya had to cut a sorry figure before representatives of the hotels who met him several times with their plea.

Now thanks to the political upheaval the state witnessed thereafter, Renukacharya is seen with loyalists of Yeddyurappa instilling optimism in those looking for extended nocturnal fun time.

According to sources in the CM's office, Renukacharya is still struggling to convince a very skeptical Yeddyurappa.

"I think the chief minister has some reservations, while Renukacharya is trying hard to drive home a point. It may take some time," said an official in the CM's office.

Undeterred
While it is said that Bidari was blocking the deadline extension, Renukacharya sought to clear the air that he was deterred by a police officer.

"Not that I cared for a police officer such as Shankar Bidari, but there were certain administrative issues that we had to consider.

The police commissioner is a part of the executive body and must abide by the legislative. Now, things have changed and we can hope for the best," he said.

Hotel managements are prepared to wait for the move and are backing the excise minister.

"The new commissioner has just taken charge and we are ready to wait before taking any further steps to urge upon the government," said Andrew Hendrain, GM of a five-star hotel.
