September turned out to be a rather unpleasant month for nurses of the city’s civic-run hospitals, with yet another caregiver being attacked by a disgruntled relative last morning -- this time at Bhabha hospital in Bandra.

Not the first time: (below) On September 7, MiD DAY had carried a similar story of a nurse being attacked by the relatives of an elderly patient in the medicine ward of KEM Hospital, after she did not attend to the ailing patient

The mother of an eight-year-old boy attacked a nurse in the Out Patient Department (OPD) of Bandra hospital around 11.30 am yesterday.

She has been booked by the cops under several sections of the IPC. The incident comes close on the heels of a similar attack on a nurse at Kem Hospital, which took place on September 7.

The woman, Shahgupta Qureshi (37), started abusing a young nurse Vinaya Manjrekar after she told Qureshi to stand in line. Qureshi had been making repeated attempts to cut the line, much to the chagrin of other patients.

“The woman had come to the orthopaedic OPD of the hospital on Monday morning with her son, who had a plaster on one arm. The boy had come for a follow-up treatment two weeks after he had injured his arm,” said a ward boy present during the incident, adding, “The mother got impatient with the long winding queues and tried to cut it and stand ahead. Manjrekar then told her to stand in line and wait for her turn. This infuriated Qureshi, who started hurling abuses at the nurse, and an argument erupted between the two,” added the ward boy, requesting anonymity.

While other relatives and patients requested Qureshi not to create a scene, she started pushing the nurse and later barged into the doctor’s room, where she grabbed hold of a stool and tried to hit Manjrekar with it.

“The security guards then came to the nurse’s rescue and escorted the woman and her child outside the hospital,” he said.

“Manjrekar suffers from a Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID). She had to be admitted to the female orthopaedic ward of the hospital, as she injured her leg in the attack,” said Dr P Jadhav, medical superintendent of Bhabha hospital, adding, “She was supposed to undergo surgery for the problem, but it got postponed.

But the attack only aggravated her condition. She is stable now.”

Following the incident, the visibly traumatised nurse was kept under observation, after which the police were alerted about the incident. A sub inspector from Bandra police station recorded the statements of both the parties last evening, following which an FIR was filed.

“The patient’s mother, Qureshi, was worried about her son’s arm which was in plaster and hence reacted so harshly. Further investigations are on,” said a sub inspector from the police station. Qureshi was later booked under sections 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), 506 (for criminal intimidation), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty) of the Indian Penal Code.u00a0
