The accident took place on Monday at around 1.20 am near the MHADA telephone exchange in Andheri while the five were taking a post-dinner walk.

The driver of the speeding car did not stop the car and fled the scene of the accident.

The locals rushed the five victims to Dhirubai Ambani hospital in Andheri. Three of them identified as Abhilash Vyas (27), Vishal Sharma (22) and Mahesh Vange (28) were discharged from the hospital, while Shashant Singh (25) and Janardhan Singh (28) are still undergoing treatment.

All the victims have been staying together at a residence in MHADA colony together.
Vyas, one of the victims, who was discharged after the treatment, said, “We all had our dinner late in the night and then left for walk. The car came from behind and hit us and fled. The locals around rushed us to the hospital.”

The impact of the accident apparently caused part of the car’s number plate to break off and the locals recovered it from the spot. The number plate — FA 2520 — was handed over to the cops.

The police contacted the RTO and have been able to ascertain the car owner to be one Falgun Shroff.

On Monday morning, the car’s chauffer surrendered to police along with the car and confessed to having committed the crime. However, cops have taken his statement, but don’t believe it and have started a search for the owner.

Senior police inspector Sharad Borse said, “The driver himself got the car. We have not arrested him, as we can’t go by his statement. The driver would never confess to the crime and there was no reason for him to return back.”

He added, “We even went to the residence of the owner, but he was not available. We are searching for him, as it is not clear as who was driving the car.”

Cops have registered a case of hit-and-run with rash driving and causing grievous hurt.
