Petrol is now cheaper

Prices reduced by Rs 2.22 a litre in Delhi from Wednesday

Petrol is cheaper by Rs 2.22 a litre in Delhi from Wednesday as oil companies have decided to reduce rates for the first time in 33 months.

The reduction is more than rolling back the Rs 1.80 a litre price hike effected 12 days ago. Price of a litre of petrol in Delhi is down from Rs 68.64 to Rs 66.42.

The move comes against the backdrop of some allies of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government and opposition parties alike criticising the move earlier this month by oil retailers to hike petrol prices by Rs1.80 per litre. The last time prices were slashed was in January 2009.
