A year after the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation's (NMMC) experiment of using a hydraulic machine to facilitate visarjan at Vashi lake failed, the civic body scrapped the entire project of installing the machines at all 23 immersion spots in Navi Mumbai.
“The project was scrapped after we discovered that the machine was unfit to carry out immersion. Instead, visarjan will be done the traditional way at all the water bodies in the city,” Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Administration) J N Sinnarkar said.u00a0

As per reports, a technical glitch in the machine and ill-trained operators inconvenien- ced devotees greatly and affected visarjan procedures at Vashi lake last year.
NMMC City Engineer Mohan Dagaonkar had designed the machine.
Eyewitnesses said some technical problem prevented the machine from reaching the centre of the lake and after four to five attempts the main cable gave away, rendering the machine useless.
“Fortunately, no untoward incident occurred after the cable snapped. This happened due to faulty design and lack of training imparted to the machine operator,” a senior NMMC engineer said.
Despite repeated attempts Mohan Dagaonkar remained unavailable for comment.u00a0
