The successful implementation of the Ahmedabad Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) has inspired the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to follow suit while implementing its own BRTS in the city in the next couple of months.

A special committee of the PMC, comprising Mayor Vaishali Bankar, Bapusaheb Chandere, chairperson of the Standing Committee, Municipal Commissioner Mahesh Pathak, 13 Corporators of various political parties and senior PMC officials, recently visited Ahmedabad to study its infrastructure projects, especially its BRTS. All the committee members travelled via BRT lanes and analysed the project.u00a0

“We are amazed by the Ahmedabad project and it will be replicated in Pune as well. Currently, the city is facing a major traffic problem and for that BRT will be an ideal solution. This time, after proper planning and analysis, we are going to implement the project. By considering the Ahmedabad BRT as an ideal model, a similar project will be implemented along four routes in Pune,” said Bankar.

Vasant More, MNS corporator who was a part of the committee, said that the core reason for the success of the Amhedabad BRT was its proper planning and awareness about the project. “It was not implemented hastily or imposed upon commuters. BRT was free for the initial three months. Through different mediums, proper information was provided, which helped achieve people’s faith. In Pune, condition was completely opposite, as no survey was undertaken before implementation,” said More.

“We are sure that Pune’s traffic problems can be solved by successfully implementing the BRT system. Now we are not going to consider resistance anymore. In the proposed four routes, the BRT system will be implemented on the lines of Ahmedabad model,” said NCP corporator Subhash Jagtap.
Apart from studying the Ahmedabad BRT model, the committee also visited Ring Road and Kankaria Lake. Also, a 35-minute interaction with Gujarat Chief minister Narendra Modi was a part of its visit.u00a0
