Podcasts can be on any subject. They can be humorous, disgusting or informative. Planet Money risked their fortunes by selecting a serious issue like oil and its omnipresence.

The two-hour series, We Buy Oil, divided into five episodes, is about buying oil from the well, its price, how it changed the world getting into everything — there is oil in phone, clothes, food as well as medicines — and mulling over a world without it. The subject compelled the speakers to take a trip to Kansas to buy oil and then, sell it to a middleman.

The duo enlightens listeners by sharing their experience in a refinery where the oil could become gasoline, diesel or a fertilizer. In short, the sequence of the digital story is tracking oil’s birth to its utility across spheres. “This project was cursed from the beginning because everyone said they are not going to sell oil to us before a man from Kansas agreed,” they say.

They fought thunder, lighting and rain to get to the muddy oil field. If you want to know the evolution and growth of oil, this is a must hear.
