Police suspect sodomy angle to murder case

50-year-old man allegedly killed by his 22-year-old roommate

Were 50-year-old Prem Shukla and 22-year-old Rajeev more than just roommates? That's the question Delhi police is trying to answer. On July 30, Prem died on his way to the hospital after receiving several stab wounds on the abdomen. The police are suspecting Rajeev in the case.

A senior police official, who chose to remain anonymous, said: "No valuables were missing; the accused had stabbed him deeply on the right side of the abdomen and he succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital. We suspect it was a case of sodomy but it can't be proved yet. It is possible that the older man was trying to force himself onto the accused. The two men were staying together for almost two months.

During investigations we've come to know there was no tussle between them in public view." On Tuesday, right after the incident, the victim's brother Surya Prakash Shukla took the body to Lucknow for the funeral.

"I don't have any idea who the accused is. I heard he was staying with my brother but I've never met him. I was staying with my brother until a few months when I got a flat for myself in Vijay Nagar, Ghaziabad. Since then I've never visited him. Now I am taking care of my sister-in-law. She's staying with her daughter in Lucknow. They had come down to Delhi a few times earlier," he said.

In the morning hours, the neighbours heard a strange noise from the victim's house and when they investigated, they saw him lying in a pool of blood. "I got a call at around 5:50 am from one of his neighbours. When I approached the house several people had already gathered there. Prem was alive at the time.

He had somehow managed to give my number to his neighbours and they called me. I in turn called up his brother and we took him to hospital but it was too late. Rajeev was staying with him for the past two months. He had approached Prem claiming he didn't have a place to stay and was out of work. So Prem had kept him as an employee to work at his Paan shop and do his household chores as well. He was a very mysterious man. He usually didn't talk to anyone," said Farhan, a friend of the deceased.

Prem Shukla was resident of Delhi for the past 12 years and he is survived by his wife and a 17-year-old daughter in Lucknow.

Justice done
A Delhi court has sentenced three men to life imprisonment for killing a man after resenting his resistance to their teasing a girl. Additional Sessions Judge Shalinder Kaur also imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 each on Jai Kishan, Suraj and Prakash Kumar after holding them guilty of murder under Section 302 of the IPC. According to the prosecution, Prakash, who used to live in a tenanted accommodation in Patel Nagar locality, killed Ram Chander along with other accused on January 22, 2004.
