Police team busts abortion racket

In a shocking incident the Kasturba police nabbed two teenagers for dumping a five-month-old male foetus at Sanjay Gandhi National Park on Friday evening. During the course of the investigation, they found that a lady, who ensured her 17-year-old daughter underwent an abortion, had paid the duo for disposing off the foetus.

According to police officials, the girl is a class 12 student of a Women’s College in Malad and is a resident of Jogeshwari. The girl’s boyfriend escaped after hearing about her pregnancy.

Fearing that her daughter will be ostracised by society, the lady decided to get the baby aborted. In order to do that, she approached Dr Hemant Duggal, an Andheri-based medical practitioner who runs Highway Medical Centre, a private maternity and general hospital at Andheri East and paid him R25,000.

To avoid any kind of controversy, Dr Duggal didn’t name the girl in the hospital documents but used her mother’s name and cited her age as 32. On Friday afternoon, he operated the girl at his clinic. The five-month-old foetus was wrapped in a plastic bag. The mother then handed over the same bag to the two teenagers — a 17-year-old boy and Ajit Vishwakarma, 20, and paid them Rs 250 each to dump the foetus at SGNP.

On Friday evening when they reached the park, they were intercepted by the security guards who became suspicious about their activities. They called the police control room following which the Kasturba police reached the spot.

During the course of investigation the duo revealed the name of the mother and the doctor who were all called to the police station.

ACP Sunil Deshmukh of Kasturba police station said, “All the four accused have been detained. They will be handed over to Meghwadi police who will register a case against them.”u00a0
