Almost 14 days after a fire broke out in flat no 1901 in Jolly Makers 1, Cuffe Parade on December 2, the fire brigade has not restored the electricity in three flats on the 19th and one flat on the 20th floor.

This has forced many residents of these flats to vacate their homes. To add to this, the legal department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) — on advice of the fire brigade — has issued a legal notice to the society claiming that the building lacked fire equipments, which help in the time of a fire.

According to Mahesh Lalvani, ex-secretary of the building, a Hydro test of the wet raiser pipes have been conducted in July this year. “The building had spent lakhs to get all the equipments fixed. Four of our fire extinguishers were used during the incident. After the fire, we called a fire solution company who confirmed that our sprinklers were in working condition. No legal issue from the fire brigade has come to our societyoffice.”

Kailash Bajaj, a resident of flat number 2001, said, “I don’t know when will I be able to move in my house, as the fire has destructed my apartment’s slabs and only after the structural engineer reviews it will I be able to shift back.”

According to PS Rahandale, deputy chief fire officer, all the extinguishers of the building had expired. “The fire fighting system was not in working condition. The BEST officers are in charge of the electricity. In such cases, it does take 14 to 15 days to fix the wirings. The BMC issued a legal on Friday.”
