ZP issues show-cause notice to institution after receiving complaints that parents are being made to pay despite wards being admitted under RTE quota

As per the RTE, every private school has to reserve 25 per cent seats for children from economically backward sections, and these kids must be admitted free of charge. Pune Zilla Parishad (ZP) officials, who have received complaints from citizens, say the school has asked all parents of students admitted under ‘RTE quota’ to deposit Rs 18,500, in violation of the Act.
“The school has illegally charged Rs 10,800 as education fees, Rs 2,000 as admission fees, Rs 1,800 as term charges, Rs 1,000 in the name of maintenance, and Rs 1,900 under miscellaneous costs. According to RTE, while admitting students from economically backward sections, a school should not charge a single rupee from parents,” said Popatrao Mahajan, deputy education officer of ZP.
The ZP sent a show-cause notice to the school administration yesterday. MiD DAY has access to documents that substantiate the parents’ claims. The school has even mentioned ‘RTE quota’ on the challan given to parents after depositing fees.
Despite repeated attempts, the principal of St Xavier’s Pre-Primary School did not take our calls.
