Pregnancy reveals minor's rape

IN yet another shameful incident, adding to the ever-increasing number of atrocities against women, a 23-year-old man repeatedly raped a 17-year-old girl in Govandi. Police officials said the incident came to light only after medical tests revealed that the minor was pregnant.

Roshan Ghadpe was arrested from his residence after the survivor identified him

They said while the minor was raped on four different occasions in the last two months, they arrested the accused, Roshan Ghadpe, on Tuesday after the girl’s parents registered an FIR against him. Investigation revealed that Ghadpe used to follow the girl and often teased her whenever she would visit her favourite vada pav stall near Govandi station.

On one such day, when the girl had gone to get a vada pav, Ghadpe forced her to come with him to his residence and allegedly raped her. He then raped her on three different occasions. An official from the Govandi police station said, “The accused, using gestures, forced the victim into his house and raped her. Since the minor is deaf and mute, she was unable to reveal her ordeal to her mother. Despite repeated attempts, her efforts to inform her parents about the incident failed.”

The official added that the incident came to light only after the girl was admitted to a hospital after her health deteriorated. “The minor began suffering from continuous bouts fever and vomiting, and was admitted to a local hospital on August 28. As the girl failed to respond to the medicines, doctors decided to conduct a sonography test on her. The examination revealed that the girl was a month-and-a-half pregnant.”

The doctors then informed the police. Upon arriving at the hospital officials discovered that while the girl was not in the state to talk, her parents were reluctant in filing a complaint as they feared it would tarnish the family’s honour. “We then called for two of her teachers so that we could communicate with the girl in sign language,” said the official.

The girl opened up to her teachers and took them to Ghadpe’s residence. “The girl immediately identified the accused the moment we reached the spot. He was sleeping when we arrested him,” the official said.
Refuting allegations that he raped the minor, Ghadpe said his physical relation with the girl was a consensual one.

“Ghadpe claims the girl never objected to his advances and readily followed him to his residence whenever he asked her to,” said another official. Ghadpe was booked under Section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code and Sections 4, 6 and 8 of the Child Protection Act. He was produced in court and has been remanded in police custody.u00a0
