The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) is abuzz as to who will be the new president after Vilasrao Deshmukh passed away on August 14, ending his 13-month tumultuous tenure

MCA sources told MiD DAY that current vice-president Prof Ratnakar Shetty and treasurer Ravi Savant are in the race for the hot seat. “The new president will be elected by the Managing Committee members on August 24. The members will cast their votes during the meeting,” informed a source.

The race for the top post has created a divide in the Sharad Pawar-Bal Mahaddalkar group. While Prof Shetty is a member of the Pawar faction, Savant is a prominent associate of the Mahaddalkar camp. “Both camps are trying hard to woo voters. It is going to be tough. A former president has been calling up voters. In this whole process, the voters are ‘bargaining’ hard to make the most out of the situation,” the source added. Deshmukh (67), who was suffering from a serious liver and kidney ailment, passed away after battling it out for nearly a week in a Chennai hospital.
