"Pune is a important city in terms of the IT and automobile business. We are planning to give a boost to wine tourism in and around the Pune by taking people on conducted tours in our buses. We are also talking to different hotels in Pune where a lot of businessmen and tourists converge," said B Shankarayan, the moderator of PGC.

Active approach
And unlike the regular wine tourism that prevails in India, where most wineries and vineyards wait for tourists to come, PGC is going the Australia and American way by taking the active approach.

PGC's newly floated company called Monsoon Winds will oversee all activities related to wines. "Only yesterday, we tied up with Deccan Plateau Vineyards, which is located 30 km from the city on the fertile plains of river Bhima," said Shankarayan. The tours are scheduled to kick start from Diwali.

Nitin Shinde, director of Deccan Plateau Wines, said, "We are collaborating with Monsoon Winds and are optimistic that it will help in promoting wines in a big way. The tour will include a group visit to wineries, information on different type of wines, how to taste wines, which food goes best with which wine, etc."

Even S S Gore, director of Nira Valley Grapes Pvt Ltd, Baramati, who has not yet been approached by Monsoon Winds, said, "The idea of wine tourism seems very interesting. I am sure it will help in promoting wines."

'I'm excited'
Anil Deshpande, a software engineer from the city is excited about this idea. "I love wines and I am looking forward to be a part of a wine tour where not only one can taste wine but also understand its various facets," he said.
