Yet again, the chain snatchers targeted senior citizens — some between ages 70 and 80 years — accosting them on the pretext of asking for directions, and then robbing them. Separate offences under section 392 of the Indian Penal Code have been registered at Kothrud, Dattawadi, Vishrambaug, Sangvi, Pimpri and Chinchwad police stations by the victims.

In the Dattawadi case, the complainant Sushila Vasant Sugavekar (80) was approached by two bike-borne unidentified suspects at the gate of her society on Shahu College Road near Panchami Hotel on Saturday evening at 5 pm. They asked her for directions to an address in the locality, and snatched her mangalsutra worth Rs 65,000.

Assistant Police Inspector V D Kesarkar from Dattawadi police station said, “We are analysing the CCTV footage in nearby areas. We have not zeroed in on anyone yet, but will arrest the suspects soon,” he said.

In the Kothrud incident, Anuradha Anant Atre (70), a resident of Sitaram Apartment in Revenue Colony at Shivajinagar, was walking near Navsahyadri Society at Karvenagar on Saturday evening around 6 pm, when two unknown suspects targeted her and snatched her mangalsutra worth Rs 1.3 lakh. PSI Sonkamble is investigating the case.

In the Vishrambaug case, Shaila Prakash Kulkarni (64) from Senadatta Peth was approached by two unknown suspects on a motorcycle on Sunday morning at around 7 am near the Sachin Tendulkar jogging track. The suspects stopped Kulkarni on the pretext of asking about an address, and then snatched her gold chain worth Rs 30,000. API UV Namvade is investigating the case.

In three other cases, Meera Karant (58) from Sai Dreams Society in Pimple Saudagar, Visya Maheshkumar Potnis (24) from Chinchwad and Darshana Sachin Tamchikar (28) from Pimpri have lodged cases against unknown suspects.

The modus operandi of the suspects in all these cases was also found to be similar to that of the Dattawadi case.

A few days ago, officials of Unit III of Pune Crime Branch had arrested a Shrirampur-based gang of five criminals, who had committed 150 offences in a single year, giving Pune police the slip during routine nakabandi checks by changing their attire and vehicles before and after each crime.
