Four-acre plot on campus under development to create 10th NLS in country

By the next academic year, the city is all set to be the 10th one in the country to have its own National Law School (NLS).

The building that will house the NLS is being developed on a four-acre plot opposite the University of Pune's Department of Management Sciences.

The law school to be set up is on the lines of the existing nine NLS in the country and admissions to it are likely to happen through a common admission test for law students, as done by the other NLSes.

Speaking to MiD DAY, director of BCUD Vasudev Gade said that the proposal for the positions of faculty members and the number of students in the NLS will be submitted to the management council on August 11.

"The ordinance for University of Pune's NLS is already in place and we can start as soon as the infrastructure is ready," he said. "At present there are 23 law colleges affiliated to the university but the standard of education at NLS will be very high as academic autonomy is being granted for it. From entrance tests to education standards and hands-on experience, everything will be world class."

Focus on research
Asked how different the NLS would be from the existing law colleges affiliated to the university, Gade said the focus would be on research and industry skills.

"It will be a five-year course, to be taken up after Class 12. The course will be different from existing syllabi and every student will have to focus on research work. The idea is to bring out lawyers who are skilled in their special area of interest and can speed up legal proceedings," said Gade.

The NLS is also expected to have wi-fi connectivity, a high-tech library and accommodation for students.

A senior member of the law faculty from the university said, "The NLS at the university is likely to be established on the lines of the existing nine NLS in the country. State governments have to get specific legislations passed for the NLS and also put in the seed money for the institutions. In fact, the Maharashtra Government has been mulling over the setting up of a NLS for many years, but the idea never bore fruit. The University of Pune took up this project and has started developing the infrastructure."
