A 25-year-old government clerk was arrested Monday in Rajasthan's Sri Ganganagar district on charges of spying for Pakistan, police said.

A 25-year-old government clerk was arrested Monday in Rajasthan's Sri Ganganagar district on charges of spying for Pakistan, police said.

Pawan Sharma, was employed as a lower divisional clerk in the sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) office at Suratgarh town in the border district, some 600 km from here.

Pawan was under surveillance of state police's special operations group for a few days. He was booked under sections of the Official Secrets Act. Pawan will be presented in a court Tuesday, a police official said.u00a0


The SDM office comes under the district collector's jurisdiction. The permission for the army for carrying various war exercises in the area is granted by the collector's office.u00a0

"Pawan Sharma used to pass on strategic information about army exercises in the area. Suratgarh also has an air base," a police official told IANS.

"He had been spying for Pakistan for about two years," he said.u00a0He added that Pawan had a mobile SIM card issued by a telecom company in Pakistan.u00a0

He allegedly used this SIM card to give information to Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence. Some district areas bordering Pakistan here catch frequencies of mobile towers situated in the neighbouring country.u00a0
