Residents say schoolkids' parents parking on road causes major traffic jams; locals also demand school open its ground to public

Authorities at Podar International School in Chinchwad had to face the ire of the local residents and social activists yesterday over the alleged use of public land by the school.

The protesters, who staged a rasta roko (road block), had two demands. One was that Podar should make separate parking arrangements as visitors to the school left their vehicles on the roadside leading to traffic jams. The second demand was that Podar open to the public the land it was using as its ground as it was not meant for the school.

The protesters argued that the ground was a reserved plot of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation.

In 1990, the PCMC had reserved the plot where the school is built, but the civic body failed to acquire the land.
It was lateru00a0 developed by Suryakant Kakade, a developer and builder, and given on long-term lease to the school.

The rasta roko was led by social activist Manav Kamble.

"Parents dropping and picking up kids means there are many vehicles parked near the school, especially during school functions like Parents' Day. This results in huge traffic jams. We have demanded that the school make separate arrangements for parking, which will give relief to local residents, and the school has agreed," said Kamble. "Another issue is the space used as a ground by the school, which was meant to be open for the public. The school built a compound wall and locked the gates. We have demanded access to it as it is a reserved plot of the PCMC."

Podar International School administrative officer Sameer Inamdar said the PCMC had never acquired the land and so it was private property. "We have taken the plot on lease from Kakade developers and builders," Inamdar said. "We had noticed that the plot was being misused by people and thus entry was restricted."
