Almeida (74) breathed his last at Lilavati Hospital, Bandra after a brief illness. "It's a sad day for everyone here at Willingdon Sports Club, Santacruz," said hockey Olympian Merwyn Fernandes.

"It's hard to imagine not having Xavier around. He loved his life and lived it on his own terms. We'll miss him," added Fernandes. The funeral was held yesterday at St Anthony's Church, Vakola.
