Anti-extortion Cell of Pune Crime Branch and Shivajinagar police have registered a case of kidnapping and extortion against four unidentified persons, who have allegedly demanded Rs 1 crore as payoff from a renowned city-based structural designer (name withhheld).

The 72-year-old had managed to rescue himselfa few days ago, after he was kidnapped by the men from Deccan Gymkhana area.

A senior police official, requesting anonymity, said, “The victim is a relative of a renowned educationist. He was initially reluctant to register a complaint. However, while he had managed to rescue himself from the kidnappers, they had made a threat call to his family members, demanding Rs 1 crore.”

It was after this threat call, that the victim decided to go to the cops, and accordingly an FIR was first filed at Deccan police station, and later transferred to Shivajinagar police station.

“We have verified the details provided by the complainant as to what exactly had happened with him a week ago. Since the victim is aged, he could not recollect the exact route by which the accused had taken him.

He can only identify a few spots near University junction and Nagar road,” the official said. “Several witnesses to the kidnapping incident, and an auto driver who had dropped the complainant near a hotel after he rescued himself, were also interrogated. They have confirmed the version of the complainant,” the officer added.

“We have got details of phone calls. We don’t suspect involvement of any gang behind this criminal act. We are now trying to ascertain the identity of the suspects,” he said.
