After reading MiD DAY's report on how Shrushti Shelar's parents are struggling to fund her second and final operation, Mumbaikars have contributed enough to save her life

Rs 2.5 lakh pours in from readers for 10-month-old's heart surgery

Two days after MiD DAY reported about Shrushti Shelar’s battle with a life-threatening heart defect, help has poured in for the 10-month-old from our readers. Citizens have donated a total of Rs 2.5 lakh for her surgery that will cost Rs 3 lakh, and with the money her parents have already collected, she now has a winning chance at life.

Shrushti Shelar’s operation has been scheduled for December 11

Shrushti’s father Anil, a driver who earns Rs 9,000 a month, said, “After MiD DAY wrote about our plight, dozens of readers donated funds to our hospital account. We are so grateful to them for helping us. The operation has been scheduled for December 11.”

Doctors at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Andheri have initiated the treatment of the infant who was diagnosed with aortic atresia a week before her birth. It is a heart defect due to which the aorta doesn’t have its natural opening and cannot distribute blood in the body.

Shrushti underwent the first stage of the surgery in March and the second and final stage was pending due to lack of funds. Anil said, “We have also managed to collect Rs 2 lakh through charitable organisations. We will use the leftover funds for her post-operative care and medicines.” u00a0
