In one of the raids organised by the Excise Department on Sunday, to curb the use of illicit/spurious alcohol, the officials seized Goan liquor (imported from Goa) from a party hall in Bandra that was being served to the guests attending a wedding party.

Requesting anonymity, a senior excise official, who was a part of the raiding team, said, "It was a random check and during our raid, we discovered cases of Goan liquor stacked up at the party. Apart from the legal liquor, the bartender was asked to serve Goan liquor, which is half the price."

According to the official, the team seized alcohol worth Rs 32,000, including well-known brands such as Vat 69, Smirnoff vodka and rum and bottles of Royal Stag. Apparently, the hall owner had sought a day's licence from the Excise Department for the party that permits the sale of government sealed bottles only. "We have arrested the person who took licence from us. He informed us that it was the client who gave them these bottles to serve their guests with," stated the official.

Confirming that they have arrested one Mirwin Remedies, N M Mudiraj, suburban superintendent, Excise department said that further investigations were on.

Strict vigil
With Christmas and New Year celebrations round the corner, the department has upped its vigil and has decided to bring the offenders to book. The official said, "We have increased our vigil at checkposts to keep a tab on the import and export of illicit/spurious liquor. Simultaneously, we are also cracking down on offenders whenever we receive tip-offs. Since liquor is expensive across most of the metros in the state, we fear the inflow will be quite high during celebrations."
