Rs 103-crore facelift for 3 WR stations by 2014

Here comes good news for those who live on the Western line beyond Andheri and have to travel to Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) on the Harbour line. The Harbour line arm is set to extend till Goregaon by early next year.

The three stations - Andheri, Jogeshwari and Goregaon - are going through a makeover costing Rs 103 crore that is set to give them a chic look with escalators, elevators and multi-storied buildings and is a part of the Rs 5,300 crore phase-II of Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP).

The extension of services till Goregaon will ensure that people traveling from CST to the western suburbs till Goregaon need not go to Churchgate or change trains in the middle. Majority of work in this regard has been completed.

Andheri
The Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) is spending Rs 20 crore on the makeover of Andheri station especially for Harbour line. Currently, Harbour line terminates at platforms 6 and 7 at a dead end.

Beyond that, there is a temporary ticketing counter and platform 1 where slow trains going towards Borivli halt. Almost everything including a 110-year-old ticket counter and Station Master Office, food stalls and a portion of platform 1 will be demolished. Commuters will have to use Foot-Over-Bridge to go outside railway premises.

A curved metal roof is already in place while bars of these metal frames are lying on the footpath close to the station premises. Commuters have been complaining that there are holes dug on the platform on the western side for this purpose and are simply blocked by duct-tapes instead of barricades at some spots.

“It is a challenge to carry out work due to the constant movement of people. However announcements are being made to warn people about this work,” said a MRVC official.

Jogeshwari
The officials are creating a new platform altogether at Jogeshwari station for the Harbour line train services. Majority of work like laying of tracks and few other works have been completed.

Jogeshwari
The new Jogeshwari station will have dome-shaped roofs and all amenities will be shifted to an elevated structure

The extension of tracks will go through an existing parking spot meant for vehicles. One part of platform 1 will also have to be demolished. Presently, Jogeshwari is one of the few stations where people can alight or board from both sides of platform 1.

Goregaon
Work for laying tracks towards Goregaon has begun but is in the initial stages. Workers are creating amenities for the Harbour line to be extended and the barricades are falling next to the rail tracks.
