Russian light-heavyweight Roman Simakov has died at the age of 27 after being knocked out and put in a coma during a WBC Asian title fight, the Russian Boxing Federation announced yesterday.

Simakov had to be carried from the ring on a stretcher after a seventh-round knockout by compatriot Sergei Kovalev in their fight in Yekaterinburg on Monday.

"He fell into a coma and was taken to hospital but the doctors were not able to revive him," RBF said in a statement. Simakov's brief career saw him win 19 of 22 fights.
