Batting legend Sunil Gavaskar says selectors will probably have a chat to Tendulkar about his future, but the batting great will take his own decision

Sachin Tendulkar’s disappointing Test run continued as he was dismissed by England spinner Monty Panesar for eight on Day Three of the second Test at the Wankhede Stadium yesterday. Tendulkar’s lean patch has led to talk surrounding his retirement from the game.

“Tendulkar has been playing for so long and he has been so consistent. This little period of lack of runs or lack of half centuries will give the critics chance to ask questions,” batting legend Sunil Gavaskar told NDTV yesterday.

He added: “At the end of the day, it is the selectors who will take the call. I think the selectors will probably have a word with Tendulkar about what his future plans are and then take a call.

“Ideally, whatever decision is taken about Tendulkar’s retirement, I believe he will make his own decision.” Tendulkar was trapped leg before wicket by left-arm spinner Panesar for eight yesterday. Panesar claimed his wicket in the first innings as well – bowled for eight.

While Gavaskar said the little champion was “struggling,” he expressed confidence that Tendulkar would overcome his hard times. “Yes, he is struggling and he is having a long bad patch if one can call that way. With so many runs and so many centuries at his hands, the moment he is going through a lean patch, everybody will start talking about that but I feel he will overcome this.

“He is trying hard. In the first innings, the ball (from Panesar) turned just a little bit. Today, you could see he changed his guard. He was standing ahead of the crease between the middle and off to negotiate the turn better. But unfortunately he was out to a straighter ball,” PTI quoted Gavaskar as saying on the channel.
