Jailed don Abu Salem was attacked by Mohammed Mustafa Dossa and his associate, accused in the 1993 Mumbai blasts, inside the Arthur Road Jail on Saturday. The weapon was a steel spoon that had been sharpened like a knife and smuggled into the jail premises. Police sources say, if the spoon had hit his neck, Salem could have died.

A police official said, "Salem sustained injuries on his face, head and shoulders." The two apparently had an argument during breakfast. An enraged Dossa then attacked Salem with the razor-sharp spoon.
An FIR has been registered under section 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) against Dossa and his accomplice.

Salem, a key accused in the 1993 serial bomb blasts, is in jail after his extradition from Portugal in 2005. He is facing trial in nine cases.

According to sources, Dossa alias Mustafa Majnoo, was an established smuggler wanted in several smuggling cases, who had escaped to Dubai. After the Babri Masjid incident, he teamed up with Dawood to carry out the 1993 blasts. By 2000, Dawood got him and Ejaz Pathan out of Dubai.

Dossa will now be transferred to Thane Central Jail, while Salem is being moved to Taloja Jail in Navi Mumbai.
