Germany's World Cup-winning footballer Bastian Schweinsteiger has been spotted spending his Christmas break in Australia supporting his girlfriend, tennis ace Ana Ivanovic.

With the 2015 Australian Open starting from January 19, World No 5 Ivanovic is hoping to mount a serious challenge for the first Grand Slam of the year, which she came agonisingly close to winning in 2008 but was thwarted by Maria Sharapova in the final. And as she practised at the Mebourne Park sports complex, the Bayern Munich midfielder was pictured cheering her on and clicking photographs of her in action on his cellphone.

On-off relationship
The on-and-off romance between Ivanovic and Schweinsteiger reportedly began in September this year, when the couple was spotted holding hands and strolling in the streets of New York during the 2014 US Open where the Serbian tennis ace lost in the Round of 64.

Media reports later suggested that Schweinsteiger had dumped Ivanovic to get back with his girlfriend of seven years, model Sarah Brandner.

According to a report in German newspaper Kurir, after Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga match against Stuttgart, Schweinsteiger met Sarah at a hotel where he promised her that she has “a permanent place in his heart”.

However, the footballer’s presence in Belgrade for Ivanovic’s 27th birthday celebrations quashed any doubts that Schweinsteiger and Ivanovic are an item.

Ivanovic will hope that the German’s presence by her side will spur her on to her maiden Australian Open title.
