Incident took place near INA Metro station, errant driver arrested

Five school children received minor injuries after a Scorpio hit the van ferrying them from behind in Sarojini Nagar area of south district on Tuesday afternoon. The incident took place at around 12.45 pm near INA Metro Station. "A private school van carrying around seven children was allegedly hit by a Scorpio from behind that led to the injury of five students of Air Force Senior Secondary School," said a police officer.

The officer said that the driver of the Scorpio, bearing registration number DL-4C R-7624, has been identified as Sunil (31). "The driver was arrested after the accident and has been booked for rash and negligent driving," he said.

The officer added that all the children in the van were taken to AIIMS and Safdarjung Hospital for treatment.
According to the officer, the van had been hired by a group of parents and was not school-owned. As per eyewitnesses, when the van reached the intersection near the Metro Station, the speeding Scorpio hit it from behind. The van toppled over instantly because of the impact.

When the parents were asked as to why they did not use the school bus, they alleged that the school bus did not drop their children home. Paramjeet Singh whose two children were injured in the accident said, "I stay in Masjid Moth and the nearest stop to my house is half a kilometre away. My children would have to walk the distance every day. So some parents came together and hired a vehicle to ferry children from the area."
