Scotland defeated Mexico 4-3 to lift the 'Homeless Football World Cup' at Stade-de-Liberte in France.

The event brings together players from a range of social projects across the world, including Street Soccer Scotland.

More than 60 national football teams comprising homeless and socially marginalized players took part in this year's tournament.

Scotland last lifted the trophy in 2007 and were ranked ninth going into the tournament, The Scotsman reports. "My heartfelt congratulations go to the Scotland team.

This is a fantastic achievement and one that all those involved in the squad should be immensely proud of," Scotland's First Minister Alex Salmond was quoted, as saying.

The initiative to organize the World Cup aims to use football to reach out and help people from some of Scotland's most disadvantaged communities.

"The impact of this competition is profound. It has engaged over 100,000 homeless people since it started with participants changing their lives for the better," Mel Young, president and co-founder of the competition said.
