A recent survey conducted by the PMC officials to exact the situation of dengue in the city highlighted several issues, especially the need for health education to curb the outbreak of the dreaded disease.
Officials of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) between October 30 and November 2 carried out the survey for the Aedes (dengue causing mosquito species). V T Pandore, consultant vector control, National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), headed the survey team.
After a spurt in the number of dengue cases was reported in October, the survey was performed in four areas falling under PMC and PCMC jurisdiction, where maximum numbers of cases were reported. Location surveyed in the four areas were: 1) Ramtekadi, Kale Padal (Nirmal Township) and Sasanenagar, 2) Balajinagar and Dhankawadi village, 3) Swargate area, PMPML depot and service centres, and 4) Anna Saheb Magar Nagar, Kalewadi and Bhatnagar (PCMC).

The survey revealed that all indices were much higher than desired range. The report stated that though control measures were being implemented sincerely, more manpower was needed to perform surveillance activities to control dengue.
It also had a mention that though people were aware about breeding of Aedes mosquitoes, they were unaware of the possible breeding grounds. Senior Regional Director D D Malekar had sent the report to the director of the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme.
