In what could make an outright Bollywood chor-police sequence, the Malad police yesterday, waited in ambush to arrest a gang of thieves, who had come to steal scrap at a godown by wading through a filthy nullah that was several feet deep. The gang had been on the police radar for the past five years.

The tip-off
According to the Malad police, a security guard posted at an ATM near the godown called the cops and reported that he had seen the thieves enter the godown. After inspecting the spot around 2.30 am, the cops discovered that the accused had entered the godown via its back door that was adjacent to the nullah. After waiting for hours, the cops realised that the nullah was too filthy for them to jump in and hence decided to seek the fire brigade's assistance to help them cross it.

"When the fire brigade officials failed to help us, our team took cover in the nearby bushes, waiting for the accused to come out. Around 7.30 am, we saw them moving out of the godown," said Sub-inspector Manohar Harpude of Malad police station.

According to the cops, the thieves first dropped the stolen consignment into the nullah and then jumped into the sewage. However, when the accused reached the other side, they ran out of luck and were nabbed by the cops, who were waiting in ambush for them.

The arrested thieves have been identified as Salim Munna Sheikh (28), Viru Patel (22), and Vijay Pandit (19). During interrogation, the accused revealed the involvement of Mohmmad Salim Samir Sheikh (20), who was nabbed later.

Harpude added, "We have booked all four of them for theft and have recovered scrap worth Rs 61,000. Besides, they have also confessed to stealing aluminium plates worth Rs 3 lakh from another godown."
