A departmental inquiry has been ordered against senior police inspector Bharat Gaikwad and his team at Sewri police station for allegedly beating up an innocent scrap dealer
An inquiry has been initiated against Senior police inspector Bharat Gaikwad and is team at Sewri police station for allegedly assaulting a scrap dealer from Wadala on September 8.
Thirty year-old Mohammad Sayyed Sheikh, who lives at RAK Marg, Wadala with his family, was returning home from work in the evening. “I was on my way to a relative’s house as she had lost her mother when I got a call from Sewri police station. Kamble, a constable informed me that the SPI Bharat Gaikwad had called me. In spite of telling him that I had to go for the cremation, he insisted I come immediately,” said Sheikh, who reached the station around 7 pm, where he was taken to the SPI’s cabin and verbally abused. “They used foul language,” alleged Sheikh, adding that Gaikwad called the police staff and asked them to beat him. He was later taken into police detection room and was physically assaulted. “My entire body was swollen due to the beatings. They abused by mother and sister throughout the time. A constable hit my private parts after which I fell unconscious. I have no idea why I was beaten up.”
After the drama, a relative was called and Sheikh was charged under IPC Section 151 and released only on September 9 at night. Sheikh went from pillar to post to complaint about the incident. Finally, he submitted a written complaint against Gaikwad and his team at Sewri police station to DCP Tanaji Gadge, a copy of which is with Sunday Mid Day. “I have ordered departmental inquiry in the case. ACP Dilip Waghmare will investigate into the matter.”
Gaikwad said, “All allegations against me are baseless. I have not done anything wrong. Sheikh is a criminal.”
