As protests demanding justice for the 23 year-old gang-rape victim intensified in the capital, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dixit said that her government and the Centre will work to make a new law, which will act “as a deterrent.”

“We have to find a solution and bring about change in the society. Apart from the new law, we also plan to start a huge awareness campaign,” she said while addressing the media.

Sheila Dixit has come under fire from politicians as well as the general public after the recent Delhi rape case

Earlier in the day, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi told Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde for the speedy and appropriate action on the issue of women security. The Prime Minister asked Shinde to take all adequate steps to stop recurrence of rape events.

Meanwhile, widespread protests continue in the capital, and across the country, against the gang rape. On Saturday, hundreds of protestors gathered at India Gate and near the Rashtrapati Bhavan demanding tougher punishment for rapists and safety for women. The government has appealed the protesters to calm down and not resort to violence.

The Delhi police, who has been under a lot of pressure to nab all the accused in the case, managed to arrest the last accused. Confirming the news, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Chhaya Sharma said, “ We arrested Akshay Kumar Singh alias Thakur from Aurangabad. He will soon be produced in court.”
