A Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) engineer was allegedly beaten up by a local Shiv Sena supporter on Tuesday noon near Siddhivinayak temple in Mumbai.

The engineer has lodged a complaint against the accused with the Dadar police station and an FIR has been filed in the matter.

The incident occurred over the routine demolition drive of illegally constructed roadside stalls undertaken by the G/South ward office on Tuesday morning. Around 11.45 am, Junior Engineer Hemant Chandane of the G/South ward was on his duty near Sayani Road near Siddhivinayak Temple when Shailesh Mali, division chief of the Shiv Sena, allegedly came and abused him. Chandane has further alleged that Mali pushed him and threatened to kill him.

"All of us (civic officials) then approached the police to file an FIR in the matter, but the police kept on delaying it due to political pressure. Finally, we refused to leave the police station until an FIR was filed," said a senior civic official.

An FIR has been filed under sections 353, 504, 506, 323 and 341 at Dadar police station against Mali and his aide.
