'Shocked by his death, as he had no history of critical illnesses'
While his death cast a shadow of uncertainty over the fate of the Adarsh case, shocked members of Kanhaiyalal Gidwani’s family bid him a tearful farewell at the Shivaji Park crematorium yesterday. Gidwani was undergoing treatment at Breach Candy hospital, where he was admitted last Thursday, after suffering a cardiac arrest. Following another mild stroke in the early hours yesterday, Gidwani passed away.u00a0For his kin, news of Gidwani’s death came as a shock, as he had been in good health prior to the cardiac arrest, and had no history of critical illnesses.
Gidwani lived in Bhima Apartments in Worli with his family. After the attack last Thursday, he had responded to treatment and doctors had said that his condition was stable.u00a0His grieving son Amit said, “My father was absolutely fit till Thursday, when he suffered a cardiac arrest. We rushed him to Breach Candy hospital and he had been admitted there since then. Early in the morning today, he suffered another minor attack, following which he breathed his last. I am in shock that a man who did not have a history of any critical illnesses suddenly passed away.”

Another relative said, “The family is in shock due to his sudden death. He was semi-conscious while undergoing treatment at the hospital. Doctors never mentioned anything about his condition being critical.”

Gidwani’s body was taken back to his residence so kin and well-wishers could pay their last respects. Some relatives were scheduled to arrive from far-off places like Sangli, and the funeral rites were thus conducted late last evening.
A shamiana was set up below the building, where the body was kept for visitors. Around 5.15 pm, the family left for the Shivaji Park crematorium to perform Gidwani’s last rites.
Industries minister for the state Narayan Rane arrived to pay his last respects, just before an ambulance carrying Gidwani’s body was rolling out of the building premises.u00a0
