Sing, dance your way out of monsoon blues

While winter is peak social time and summer is excruciating, the monsoon leads to enforced homestays at times. But who said that can’t be a boon in disguise? If there is a hobby you have wanted to pursue, we suggest you do it now. If you love music, then you might want to brush up your musical talents.

Music enthusiast Jennifer D’souza has done so and is learning the guitar. “Coming from Jharkhand, I did not have access to good music classes over there. Hence, when I got my law admission in Pune, the first thing I did was to enroll in a good guitarclass. For that I have come a month early in the city as there is a lot of spare time before my college gets started.”

According to Nitin Tiwari, owner and coach of Musico Guitar Institute, the guitar is a highly preferred instrument among youngsters. “Student enrollment definitely increases during this season as the number of outdoor trips gets minimised due to rains. Both acoustic and electric guitars are in demand by city youngsters. They opt for Western style training when it comes to learning as it’s simpler. Keyboards are a second favourite and drums come last as per youngsters’ choice these days. One can learn enough in three months to play in front of a small audience and the three months of monsoon are a preferred time for it.”

You don’t even need to physically visit the classes to learn. There are online classes as well and sites such as www.virtualmusicalinstruments.com and www.music-courses.com/ can assist you for the same.

Aside from musical instruments, city-based youngsters are also learning to dance this monsoon. “Music and dance go side by side and are preferred activities this season. Says Harsh Varpe, dance instructor from the Shiamak Davar Dance Academy, “In the city, there is a demand for Bollywood Jazz and Hip-Hop style of dancing which are hot favourites among youngsters.”
