India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni yesterday expressed his satisfaction over the Eden Gardens strip in the wake of a controversy last week

“The wicket looks good. We will have to see the wear and tear and how it behaves. I don’t think there will be much help for the spinners initially. At this time of the year, fast bowlers get some swing, both at the start of the play and towards the end. Fast bowlers will be really crucial,” Dhoni said.

The captain, who has been at loggerheads with the curator Prabir Mukherjee, after asking for a rank turner from Day One, took a good look at the 22-yard strip yesterday.

Mukherjee shot to fame a few days ago following his remark directed at Indian captain Dhoni calling his demands “immoral and illogical”. Things took an ugly turn when the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) sent East Zone representative of the pitch and grounds committee, Ashish Bhowmick to replace Mukherjee, who dared to defy the captain’s call for a rank turner from Day One.

The captain stressed on the ‘home advantage’ factor, which he has been advocating before the series started. “We will stick to turning tracks. That’s what our strength is. That’s what home advantage means. It’s like Australia and England winning games in their conditions, but they stick to their speciality there. It’s the same for sub-continental teams,” Dhoni remarked.

However, the India captain didn’t mince his words while expressing his displeasure over flat wickets: “Sometimes, we see that even five days are not enough to get a result. I feel the challenge is when you play on tracks that assist spin.”u00a0
