Our Lady of Perpetual Succour’s (Chembur) 2-0 win over Hiranandani Foundation School (Powai) in the Mumbai Schools Sports Association (MSSA) U-16 Div II inter-school football tournament was overshadowed by shortcomings of the MSSA at Azad Maidan yesterday.

Balchandra Patel and Aryan Sanil scored a goal each in Our Lady’s win.

Hiranandani Foundation coach Chandan Rathod was furious with the school body after one of his players, Aumkar Satavase, suffered a cut on his thigh and had no physio to attend to him. “My player got a cut on his thigh but had to soldier on due to a lack of medical attention.”

This was after the incident involving Cambridge School player Schezan Khwaja who, two days ago, fell while suffering from an illness, but had no physio to attend him.

Rathod was also upset about the lack of changing room for boys. “They have a changing room for girls but not for boys. Suppose a girl’s match is scheduled just after a boy’s match. How can my players change in front of them?” Rathod asked.

MSSA football secretary Sebastian Fernandes said, “The physio sometimes arrives late due to early morning matches. I am also planning to bring in two more physios. We have also told teams to carry first-aid kits as a last resort.”

There was another controversy when Rathod had an argument with the referees regarding the game’s duration, which was curtailed to 20 minutes per half. “MSSA rules state the time to be 25 minutes but they gave us only 20 minutes. The referee said the ball was floating, that is why they had reduced the time.”

In response, the referees said that the teams had come late and that is why they had to curtail the duration.
