Last month, an evening witnessed a gathering of 15 strangers. The one thing they shared in common was a love for the Spanish language.

This meeting was the first edition of Café Tertulia (tertulia means get-together), organised by the Spanish Learning Institute, Hispanic Horizons. "This is a monthly meeting we have organised for anybody who wants to stay in touch with Spanish. You come, chat and sip on coffee," says Joslin Cherian, administrative manager. Spanish is believed to be among the easier languages to learn, because of its phonetic nature, which means it's written the way it's pronounced.

The event is open only to those conversant in the language, and not for people who want to start learning it from scratch.

Hispanic Horizons was started by Spaniard Blanca Dean in 2011 and conducts Spanish courses both in the classroom and online. It also offers services related to the language, such as translations, interpretations, voice overs and so on. Cherian hopes that former students from the institute will also attend these meet-ups. "We want to create a space where people can connect over their love for the language. This is beneficial for students who want to practise spoken Spanish, expats who want to converse in their mother tongue, or just anyone who needs to talk."

Cherian says there has been an increase in the number of people interested in learning Spanish, because people want to bulk up their CV. Moreover, many B-schools are teaching the language.
