Special prayers held to mark Mother Teresa's death

MiD DAY had reported last year about the travails of the 42-year-old, who was callously shown the door by the transport body after he was found to be infected with the dreaded virus. Now, the court has directed that the petitioner be reinstated and compensation will be decided in the next hearing

Special prayers held to mark Mother Teresa's death

Thousands of people from all walks of life on Thursday paid homage to Mother Teresa on her 16th death anniversary with special prayers and masses in the eastern metropolis.

Nuns of Missionaries of Charity, the Catholic Order founded by Mother Teresa to help the poorest of the poor, the infirm and the dying, held special prayers at their global headquarters Mother House.


Devotees thronged the central Kolkata building since dawn to offer floral tributes and prayers at Mother Teresa’s grave. People sang hymns in memory of Mother Teresa, who died on September 5, 1997.

A big mass was held at the St Xavier’s College campus in the afternoon, where a large number of priests participated. Remembrance programmes were held at various schools.

Mother Teresa - born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in Skopje, Macedonia, Aug 26, 1910 - made Kolkata her home for 68 years since 1929.

Honoured with the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979, Mother Teresa was beatified on October 19, 2003.
