Teenage girls in rural Maharashtra will now get sanitary napkins at reasonable rates through a special government scheme that the Cabinet approved on Tuesday. Adults can avail of the scheme but they will have to pay more.

The government will brand the napkins 'Asmita' and sell an 8-piece pack for Rs 24 (small size) and Rs 29 (big size) to adult females, while school/junior college students will get the pack at Rs 5 each. Local self-help groups will be roped in to vend sanitary napkins to girls.
