Aerial Silk and Hip-Hop experts from the US for dance school's anniversary celebrations
For his dance academy's 10th anniversary, Sumeet Nagdev brings down Aerial Silk and Hip-Hop experts from the US
US ÂÂdance instructor and Aerial Silk expert Brande Lee
"You will be able to master these art forms only if you travel to the artistes' country," says choreographer Sumeet Nagdev, while explaining the itinerary of his dance school's 10th anniversary. The ace dance instructor is bringing down Brande Lee — a trapeze artiste and an Aerial Silk expert from the US — along with her husband, James Morrow — a Hip-Hop connoisseur — to raise the curtains.
His academy, Sumeet Nagdev Dance Arts (SNDA), has the reputation of flying down international artistes and this time, there will be a host of them at the premises for the anniversary celebrations. "There will be 10 events (six workshops and four performances) over four months," adds Nagdev.
While Lee will focus on Silk skills, intricate climbs and foot locks, Morrow is expected to combine contemporary dance with Hip-Hop. Even if you are beginner, it is not a problem for there will be separate batches. "The idea of SNDA has always been to present content that is unique. The artistes need not be celebrities or television personalities but the brand of dance they bring to the table must be easy to connect to. It should be modern and urban. Not everybody knows how to merge a circus performance with Silk, and circus performers are unlikely to come down to teach you," says the 30-year-old, who met Morrow at the American Dance Festival in 2010.
Friendship over the years
"I was there at the festival as an international resident choreographer for six weeks. He was the faculty member for Hip-Hop. His interpretation of the style is refreshing because he borrows a lot from contemporary and modern dance," informs Nagdev, who brought Morrow to India for the first time in 2011.
They exchanged ideas and stayed in touch. "He got married to Brande Lee; I will be meeting her for the first time," he says, adding, "But whenever James is here, he wants to learn Bollywood style dance. He keeps taking videos of people dancing to it. They are happy and positive people," adds Nagdev.
