The victim with her husband and stepdaughter were walking down Colaba Causeway on Wednesday night when the accused, Ravikant Shankar Singh (25), apparently felt her up outside Leopold's Cafe.
Both parties were brought to Colaba police station, but only a non-cognizable offence was registered against Singh for indecent behaviour in a public place' under section 110 of the Bombay Police Act. The accused was fined Rs 1,200. The victim did not register a case of molestation after the accused pleaded with her for mercy as he would lose his job.
Neither the victim nor her relatives wanted to speak with the press. The victim was in Mumbai for a holiday and left the city this morning by train for Chiplun. Police also remained tight-lipped about details.
We have been requested by the victim to not disclose either details about her or the accused to the media,said the duty officer, who added that the Colaba police saw such arguments' frequently. There was a scuffle and then both parties exchanged abuses. They then came in to file a complaint, said the officer.
However, an eyewitness to the incident said, This is definitely not the first time such a thing has happened to foreign female tourists or local women here. I was on my way to dinner when I heard the commotion across the street, said Colaba STD booth manager Felix Ambrose who stepped in to intervene on the victim's behalf.
