Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy: Samarth Singh 64 powers easy win for Uttar Pradesh

Opener Samarth Singh struck a superb 64 to help Uttar Pradesh score an easy nine wicket win over Jharkhand in their Super League Group B match of Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 cricket tournament in Mumbai on Friday.

Singh hit four boundaries and as many as sixes in his 49-ball knock and shared 112 runs for the opening wicket with Prashant Gupta (42 not out) as Uttar Pradesh comfortably chased down the target of 134 with 3.1 overs to spare.

Captain Suresh Raina, who will be doing national duty in the three T20 Internationals in Australia later this month, struck a quickfire 11-ball 20 not out with the help of three boundaries to take UP to 134 for 1 in 16.5 overs and wrap up the match at Bandra Kurla Complex ground.

Kaushal Singh was the lone wicket-taker as Jharkhand bowlers were hit all over the park by the marauding UP batsmen. Earlier, put into bat, Jharkhand made 133 for 7 in their allotted 20 overs with Shasheem Rathour top-scoring with a 43-ball 40 while Saurabh Tiwary was the other notable contributor with a 28-ball 38.

Jharkhand found themselves on the backfoot early on as they were reduced to 28 for 2 in the fifth over before Tiwary and Rathour did make a brief revival with a 53-run stand for the third wicket to take their side to 81 for 3.

But, Jharkhand could not build on the momentum once Tiwary was out in the 13th over. Number five batsman Ishank Jaggi stuck around for a 22-ball unbeaten 26 but ultimately Jharkhand ended their innings at 133 for 7.

For Uttar Pradesh, paceman Amit Mishra grabbed two wickets for 14 runs while Praveen Kumar, Ankit Rajpoot and Suresh Raina took a wicket each.

Brief Scores:
Jharkhand: 133/7 in 20 overs (Shasheem Rathour 40, Saurabh Tiwary 38; Amit Mishra 2/14) Uttar Pradesh: 134/1 in 16.5 overs (Samarth Singh 64, Prashant Gupta 42 not out; Kaushal Singh 1/18).
