A 34-year-old construction contractor was arrested by officials of the Talegaon Dabhade police station for kidnapping three minor girls, who are rag-pickers, and raping one of them in the wee hours of Saturday.

The incident came to light after the girl narrated her ordeal to her family. The suspect was identified as Ayub Kasim Patel, a resident of Talegaon.   According to officials of the Talegaon Dabhade police station, four girls ventured into Bhalerao Colony in Talegaon to collect scrap material on Friday afternoon.

Patel, who is a resident of the colony, accused them of stealing and forced them to sit in his tempo. “One girl escaped, but three were detained by Patel,” said PSI Amol Chaudhary. “He took the three girls to an under-construction apartment. He kept them there all night and raped one of them in the wee hours of Saturday.”

Patel released the girls in the morning after warning them of dire consequences if they revealed what had happened. “The girl who was raped broke her silence and narrated the incident to her brother,” Chaudhary said. The family lodged a complaint at the police station yesterday and Patel was subsequently arrested from his residence. He was remanded in police custody till July 1.
