Next month, Tata Theatre will host an event dedicated to just one musical instrument — the piano. Said to have been created in 1709 by an Italian harpsichord maker, Bartolomeo di Francesco Cristofori, the instrument is now a staple in Western classical orchestras and finds a great following in Mumbai as well. The evening at NCPA is being curated by composer Louiz Banks.

"After intensive research we found out that there is so much talent in the country that needs a viable platform," says Banks, adding, "We wanted to feature a rich variety of styles and genres and not just Western classical music. So, we are featuring classical pianists, jazz pianists as well keyboard players focusing on other popular genres in their own distinctive styling."

Among those who will feature at this performance is Kashyap Iyengar. Iyengar, 15, who studies at Delhi's Sanskriti School is a progressive rock keyboardist, vocalist, songwriter, music producer, arranger and a multi-instrumentalist.

Being a self-taught musician, Iyengar has been using the keyboard as his principal instrument since the age of 5. With his newly formed psychedelic rock band 'Transference', he'll be going on a world tour that includes the South African leg in 2016 and the South American leg in 2017. Iyengar is also the founder of an online band that is dedicated to the music of progressive metal band 'Dream Theater' — namely 'Split Screen Theater', which involves musicians from all over the world, particularly from the prestigious Berklee College Of Music.

He also holds the highest distinction degree in the 'Music Production' course offered by Berklee College Of Music Online and counts Syd Barrett, Pink Floyd and Johann Sebastian Bach among his musical influences. Iyengar says, "The piano, or any keyboard instrument closely related to piano for that matter, is one few instruments that is complete by itself, in the sense that it doesn't need colour from other instruments to sound like a whole and not a part of the whole."

Inspired but worried that your home will not be big enough to accommodate a piano? Banks says, a medium-sized upright piano will sit against a wall without taking up too much space. "There are small-sized digital pianos available in the market that can replicate the acoustic piano."
