Recession cannot dampen their spirits. In fact, they quit jobs to make their own Kannada movie 35/100
While recession has hit many industries across the board, a group of techies feel that the entertainment industry holds promise.
They have put in their savings and produced a Kannada film, 35/100.
All those involved with the film are new comers, including the distributors and a majority of them are techies.u00a0
Potential?
Deepak H T and three of his friends have put in their savings amounting to around Rs 80 lakh to make the film. Their company is called Kasturinivasa Productions. Three months ago, Deepak resigned from his job with a software company to focus completely on the film. "With recession, we feel entertainment industry is a better bet. It is an industry, which has constant growth. Even in the worst of times it has a 17 per cent growth rate," he said.
Though putting one's entire savings in one project is a risk, the group is happy to take chances.
"We are all young, with the eldest being 28. This is the time when we can afford to take risks. If we lose money, we have age on our side to earn money later. Perhaps a few years down the line, we may not find is easy after some years it would not have been easy for us to take this risk," he said.
Among the friends, Satya takes care of the editing, Yashwant has acted and oversees marketing and distribution, Santosh and Deepak look after the production. Besides them, there are many techies working in different capacities of the filmmaking including the lyricist Swaraj Guruprasad. "We have non-techies as well like the music director Pranav, actors Shweta, Raghu and Manoj. All of us are first timers in cinema. For every one it is the first film. Even the guy who is designing the posters is doing it for the first time," he said.
35/100 is a college love story
The friends got interested in filmmaking during their college days when they participated in film making contests.
"We had reached up to the semi-finals. During this period we were asked to make many short films and documentaries. We contacted people through social networking sites and e-mails for various roles then. For our film we have taken the same people since we knew who would fit in where," he said.
The film is based on different perspectives. "For every individual, he or she is the hero or heroine in his life. The same concept is used in the film. The scenes are shown from various perspectives. For instance, when a police station scene is shown, you may find something incomplete. After some time the same scene is shown through a different perspective," he said.
35/100 is a college love story. "In most films we see love stories glamorised. In our film it is depicted in the way it happens in real life. We have situational songs, but no item numbers," he said.
The film is to be released by this month end. "We have finished most of the work. Only the mixing part in remaining, which we expect will be over by Saturday," he said.
