Thane: The city will host the Pink Run dedicated to women runners for first time on March 19. Announcing the schedule of the event, former model and avid runner Milind Soman on Monday expressed his lament over lesser participation of women in the fitness movement compared to their male counterparts. Around 2,000 women are expected to participate in the Pink Run.

"Women are generally short of time and hence are not seen in large numbers in such events. The Pinkathon is organised by keeping this thing in mind," he told reporters. He said 'Pink Run' was held in eight cities last year wherein the participation of women was around 80,000. "This time the run will be organised in Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai and Delhi. It will be held in Kolkata and Thane for the first time," he said. The event is organised by Miraclemunj in association with Runtastic Dil se and Boarding Kites Entertainment along with Soman's Pinkathon.

Soman said the objective of the event is to encourage an active lifestyle and overall fitness amongst women, create awareness about breast cancer and to bring in thousands of
women into distance running for first time. "We are very excited to bring 'DOSTI Thane Going Pink' to the women of Thane and neighbouring areas. It is the seed of change. We want the city to be part of this crusade that is being carried forward by a growing community of empowered women across India, who share a belief that a healthy family,
a healthy nation and a healthy world begins with empowered women," he said.

The organisers have announced one Gayatri Dhamdhere as the mascot for the visually-impaired squad, Supriya Patil as the mascot for the underprivileged and Priyanka Gunani for the new mother category who will run 5-kms.
