According to reliable sources, the disqualified BJP and independent legislators performed the ritual at Bhadrakaali temple in Kerala on Diwali amavasya on Saturday. Yeddyurappa had also reportedly come to the same temple to perform the ritual just before the vote of confidence.
"The ritual seems to have served its purpose for the CM. He won two votes of confidence after the speaker disqualified 11 BJP and five independent MLAs. It seems the disqualified legislators want to use his own trick to teach the CM a lesson and tell him that they are not going to bow out without a fight," said a source.
Sources said that while Beluru Goplakrishna and Goolihatti Shekar had taken the initiative for the ritual, a handful of other disqualified MLAs were also present. Belur is a BJP MLA from Sagara while Goolihatti is an independent.
CM unfazed
Yeddyurappa, too, had got wind of the MLAs' plans and, on Sunday, he had publicly stated that some people were using black magic to "finish him". "I know what these people are doing.
They are using black magic to finish me. But it won't affect me because I believe in God and my poojas to Him are with a positive intent. Not like the black magic that these people are using," he had said.
'Ensures prosperity'
According to Bhanuprakash Sharma, a family priest of Yeddyurappa, Gardhabha Prayoga (donkey sacrifice) is the main part of the ritual and it is done to get rid of the enemy (Shatrusamhara).
"It is an elaborate procedure and, if it is done properly, you can contain the enemy and ensure your continued prosperity," he said.
Sharma was the main priest during many rituals that Yeddyurappa performed on his advice. He also advised H D Deve Gowda, former president and JD(S) national president, on these rituals before Yeddurappa began consulting him.
Gowda had reportedly performed rituals called Ashta Varaha and Shwatha Varaha in the thick jungles of Nagaland a few years ago. Ashta Varaha involves burying eight pigs alive in eight directions while one white pig is buried as part of Shwetha Varaha.
When MiD DAY contacted Beluru Gopalakrishna, he said, "We performed a religious pooja and not black magic as alleged by Yeddyurappa."
Gopalakrishna is in Delhi along with the other disqualified MLAs, who have appealed to the Supreme Court against their disqualification.
